The NAP Cup Begins!

No, it’s not a typo. The preseason competition that gets us all excited about the return of footy before quickly being declared as nothing but a series of ‘glorified practice matches’ has just begun. Oddly enough, this shift in attitude usually coincides with a crushing opening round loss (Collingwood, for example)…but it will be nap time for seven other sets of supporters soon enough.

But back to the ‘crushing opening round loss’ bit. That’s the only way to describe last Saturday night’s NAP Cup opener – the traditional ‘Abu Dhabi Derby’ between Toyota and Air Emirates Adelaide and Collingwood.

Highlights from the weekend (apart from the obvious):

  • Great to have Dennis Cometti back and firing from the opening match, dropping football commentary gold such as “Heath Shaw…Rhys Shaw…unsure!” Nice…
  • Solid debut from Nathan Buckley in his new commentary role with Channel 7. It probably helped that the Pies were one of the clubs out there…but there was definitely a bit too much talk about gastro for my liking..
  • By the way, all the gastro talk was about his former teammates – it was not an over-share on his part…
  • Mick Malthouse declaring Adelaide “the fittest January side going around“…despite the fact we are now in the second week of February and they haven’t played anyone else. Um, ok. Well, they definitely looked fitter than the Pies the other night…
  • This, of course, was between gripes about the new interchange rule and complaints about excess travel – delivered with a straight face and everything…

But now we have seven matches to look forward to this weekend…and about freakin’ time too! No more months of fluffy stories about preseason ‘happy-camps’ held in all corners of the globe. No more declarations of playing groups ‘training the house down’ or being ‘the fittest they’ve ever been’.

And, please – no more Matthew Knights-taking-over-from-Sheeds-odyssey articles. The dozen or so since October is quite enough, thanks – and this from an Essendon sympathiser!

But now, finally, we have some ‘fair dinkum’ footy in just a few days!!!

Well, it’ll do until the real stuff kicks off in March…
