When The Game Takes Over Our Drunken Idiot Coverage! (2009 AFL Grand Final Preview)

We will now briefly focus on a football game before returning you to your regularly scheduled programming…which, apparently, is this guy!

Relax, people! Once Saturday’s game is over, we can go back to the main reason we all follow the game…what stupid Brendan Fevola up to now and what EVERYBODY ELSE thinks about it! Or maybe you’ve had enough of Fev and would prefer to talk about trades – where Shaun Burgoyne thinks he is going or where Brock McLean says he is going.

Perhaps you are stunned that Marty Clarke is choosing to go home or that Matthew Lloyd is choosing to stay home. But for now, the 2009 AFL Grand Final needs to take centre stage so you’ll just have to make do with that…

Not a bad consolation though…the two best teams in the comp are virtually at full strength (sorry Max fans!) and primed to present us with a fitting finale to the footy season. It’s going to be entertaining day and a great spectacle but, please, remember to behave appropriately. You don’t want to end up like Stupid Fevola (that is, a big blokey legend!), do you?

No change

So…who wins this bloody thing? St Kilda made the one team change but it will not result in a fairytale send-off for stalwart Max Hudghton. Geelong are unchanged but have sterner opposition compared to last week. Hard to predict a winner with any great confidence; hence the call of a draw’ being quite popular.

For me, the deciding factor is simple…and probably a touch immature, but oh well. I just don’t want to see Stephen Milne win a grand final. The thought of that little twerp receiving a premiership medallion and whooping it up would ruin my entire year.

MilneSucks

For the love of God, do not let this twerp win a premiership!

If St Kilda did win and for whatever reason; concussion,  injury, diarrhoea; Milne was not involved at the end, I could live with that. If they could vote him off the podium and replace him with Robert Harvey, even better. But please Geelong..do not let this twerp win!!!

We Are The Champions!!! (Geekin’ Out – Fantasy Footy)

Riewoldt leads Half Back Flanker to premiership glory!!!

Woohoo!!! It’s the nerdiest Mad Monday ever! After following the fortunes of our three fantasy footy teams, all of which qualified for finals action, we watched on in horror as first our Herald Sun Super Coach and AFL Premium Dream Team squad met their demise. But we cracked it for a win in our AFL Dream Team league, taking out the grand final with what ended up being a comfortable win. But it wasn’t without some anxious moments…

The match started well for us when our mid-priced defender (Garrick Ibbotson) outscored our opponent’s elite midfielder (Dane Swan) in the Friday night game. But we freaked out on Saturday afternoon when Geelong’s Andrew Mackie pulled out late from the West Coast game and it got worse later that night when we logged in to check the progress scores…and found our team behind 1,776 to 1,261! We instantly thought that we were goners, being over 500 points behind, but a quick look at the two teams gave us hope. All 22 Carina Lions players had scores to their names, meaning that this would be their final tally for the round…and we still had seven players to go on the Sunday, including our captain!

And, sure enough, some big performances on the Sunday from a pair of Tigers and captain Nick Riewoldt covered the loss of Mackie and secured the premiership! But rather than get too Fevola-style crazy in celebration this week, we are going to prepare ourselves at one final tilt at fantasy football glory in the AFL Finals Dream Team competition. More on that later…

Brett Deledio kicked arse on Sunday to ensure we took out the virtual flag!

Final Standings

Dream Team: 40,913 points, 7,836th place overall – Highest rank was 2,388 at round five but fell away dramatically (below 19,000 at round 13) before recovering to finish the year strongly.

Grand Final: Defeated 5th placed Carina Lions 1,904 to 1,776 –  The Carina Lions could only produce three 100-plus scores for the round, one of those being our opponents also had him so no advantage to either of us.

Good: Our choice of trading Pavlich for Steve Johnson proved a masterstroke…he kicked six goals to produce a great score of 138! Bryce Gibbs finished his impressive year with a 135 and Rhys Palmer’s game on Friday night (115) was great to watch!

But our three 100-plus performers on the Sunday won the flag for us! Brett Deledio finished off a fine season with a massive 136 while late season recruit Chris Newman pulled out a 103. And captain Riewoldt was always going to come up trumps against the depleted Bombers, ending with 266 points in total…and that figure could have easily cracked 300 if he kicked straight in front of goal!!

Bad: Paul Chapman screwed us over again this week, this time in reverse. After topping 100 when benched last week, we put him on the field and he pulls out a 49! Nick Stevens could only come up with a 40 but the Carina Lions also had him so no damage done. Needing some big games from our Sunday players, Matthew Richardson failed to fire with a 51 while Brad Johnson’s mixed year ended with a horror 34.

Ugly: The late withdrawal of Cat Andrew Mackie left us depending on the solid but unspectacular play of St Kilda’s Sean Dempster, our emergency defender. Standing in the outer at the Dome last Sunday, we could do nothing but cringe as Dempster crumpled to the turf in the first couple of minutes of the first quarter with a season-ending ACL injury!

We got it right with the Steve Johnson trade but our final trade was a bust! We contemplated trading Dempster and picking up Peter Burgoyne but instead swapped Mark Nicoski for Paul Wheatley. That decision proved to be disastrous – instead of getting Burgoyne’s 151 and Nicoski’s 59 as the emergency for Mackie, we got Wheatley’s 56 and Dempster’s 4. That’s 60 points instead of 210!!! If we had lost narrowly on the weekend, this would have haunted us for months!
